Le dernier jour d'un condamné

A man without a name, about whom we know nothing—not even his crime—has just been sentenced to the guillotine: he has only a few days left to live. As he awaits his execution, he records his final thoughts and sensations. His journal follows the chaotic flow of his consciousness, with moments of panic, surges of hope or rebellion, and one haunting fear—the approach of death. A text of enduring relevance and the first act in a struggle of which Hugo would remain the emblem, The Last Day of a Condemned Man (1829) is, according to its author, “the general and permanent plea on behalf of all the accused, present and future.” It is undoubtedly the greatest indictment ever written against the death penalty.
