The collection Les Contemplations brings together texts written by Hugo over more than twenty years, arranged according to a fictitious chronology. From the famous Reply to an Act of Accusation, where the poet presents himself as a revolutionary of language, to What the Mouth of Shadow Says, inspired by his experiences with spiritualism, and including poems about the death of Léopoldine, these are the memoirs of a soul sketched in hollow form.
Published in 1856 between Les Châtiments and La Légende des siècles, Les Contemplations represents the pinnacle of Victor Hugo’s poetic work.
The first tome of Les Contemplations includes the following three books: Aurore, L'Âme en fleur, Les Luttes et les Rêves.
