Securing the Storyplay’r App: User Guide

As parents, it can be worrying to let our children on their own on our smartphones or tablets, though it can be helpful sometimes, such as during long drives! If you wish to let your child choose and discover books on their own, Storyplay’r can help you secure your tablet or smartphone.

Whether you’re on Android or iOS, did you know that there is a way to block any application, to prevent children from leaving it? That’s called the Kiosk Mode on Android and Guided Access on iOS.

The Kiosk mode on Android

First of all, you have to go to your device’s settings to activate the Kiosk mode.

  1. Go to the settings.
  2. Type “pin” in the search bar.
  3. You’ll see “App pinning”, click on that.
  4. Then, activate the functionality.

Once the mode is activated, here is the process to follow to lock any application :

  1. Open the application you wish to lock.
  2. Click on the button “Overview”. it’s the button with the 3 lines on the bottom left.
  3. Click on the icon of the app you wish to pin. A menu should appear.
  4. In that menu, you can click on “Pin this application”

You’ll find more details on the official Android document.

Guided Access on Apple

Just like on Android, the functionality first has to be activated on the device. To do so, follow these steps :

  1. Settings > Accessibility ; then activated Guided Access.
  2. Click on “Passcode Settings”.
  3. Define a passcode for this mode. (This code will be asked when you wish to leave the mode).

Once the mode is activated, here is the process to lock an application :

  1. Open the application of your choice.
  2. On iPhone X or more recent: click 3 times on the lock button. On iPhone 8 or before, click 3 times on the home button.
  3. Select (or not) the areas to lock.
  4. Click on “Guided Access”, then “Start”.

To leave this mode, click 3 times on the same button as before, and type your passcode.
