Charlie and the Canadian snowstorm
Charlie and James are on a plane. They are flying to Canada. Charlie points out the window. – Look! says Charlie, I can see mountains. And snow! – Can you see bears? asks James. My dad says there are bears in Canada. – Hmm, no, I can’t see any from here, says Charlie. A flight attendant talks over the loudspeaker: – Please adjust your seatbelts! We’re about to land in Vancouver. James’s cousin Lisa meets them at Vancouver airport. She is holding strange hats for them. – Hello, Charlie! Hello James! says Lisa. Welcome to Canada! Here, I’ve got these trapper hats for you. – Thanks, says Charlie. But why are they so big and fluffy? – They are special hats to cover your ears to keep them warm. It’s very cold in winter here.
Charlie, James and Lisa take a bus together to Whistler Mountain. It’s a long drive. Finally, they arrive at a big wooden house at the top of the mountain. – This is a ski lodge, says Lisa. We’ll sleep here tonight. It’s a great place. James points to a forest near the ski lodge. – Charlie, says James. Do you think there are bears in that forest? – I hope not! answers Charlie. Inside the lodge, the bedroom has bunk beds. James stands proudly on the top bunk. – I’m the king of the castle! says James. – And I’m an invader! says Lisa. – And I’m a bear, says Charlie. Grrrrr! James throws pillows at Charlie and Lisa. – Pillow fight! he shouts.
The next day, they go skiing. Lisa is an expert skier, but this is Charlie’s first time learning to ski. – Help! screams Charlie. I’m going too fast! – Don’t worry, says Lisa. You can slow down – just point your toes together. – Wow, that works! says Charlie. Look, I’m slowing down. Thanks! James and Lisa are snowboarding on Whistler Mountain. – Look at me, says James. I’m the snowboard champion of the world! – Well then, says Lisa, I’m the snowboard champion of the universe! Lisa does a really cool backflip in the air. – I think Lisa wins, says Charlie. Sorry, James!
For lunch, the three friends have a picnic in the snow. There are lots of delicious things to eat and drink. – Do you like hot chocolate? asks Lisa. – Yes, I love it! says Charlie. – Mine’s finished, says James. Can I have more? Suddenly, something white and furry moves quickly towards them! – Is it a dog? asks Charlie. – Is it a bear? asks James. Will it eat us? He feels a bit scared. – No, says Lisa. It’s a snow weasel! It doesn’t like humans. Look, it’s already running away to hide! The snow weasel disappears into the snow.
That night, it’s very cold, even inside the ski lodge. – Let’s light a fire to keep warm, says Lisa. – Here, Charlie, let’s put logs in the fireplace, says James. They build a big pile of logs, then Lisa lights it with a match. – This is much better! says Charlie. They cook marshmallows over the fire. Suddenly they hear a very loud wind outside. – There will be a snowstorm tonight, says Lisa. – What’s a snowstorm? asks Charlie. – It’s when a lot of snow falls from the sky quickly, says Lisa.
