This is the first story of the third son of a miller. It is also the story of a cat. When the miller split his holdings among his sons, the first was given the mill, the second was given many fine animals, and the third son of a miller was given a cat. “Hmmm!” thought the third son of a miller, “What will I do with a cat?” “I’m not just a cat. I’m much more than that! Give me the match to this red leather boot, and I will give you back a mountain of loot!” said the cat. This took the third son of a miller by surprise. He knew very few talking cats, but with nothing to lose, the third son of a miller gave the cat the matching boot. Off ran Puss in Boots in search of adventure and treasure…
In very short order, Puss in Boots found a burlap bag. “This is the best luck this cat has had yet! With a bag in my pocket, riches are easy to get!” thought Puss in Boots. He then swiftly caught a rabbit in the burlap bag, which he presented to the King as a gift. “Who provides me with this nice gift?” asked the King. “The Marquis Carabas, so kind and so true, humbly and generously gives this gift to you!” said Puss in Boots.
