The song of the dunes
The evening's starry sky cast a pale light over Meï-Li's village. At the edge of the beach, Moko sat pondering... He was gazing out at the horizon, and thinking of travel...
Meï-Li was close by, to keep him company. They listened to the wind in the distance, and, near their feet, to the sounds of the water. Suddenly, a loud noise pierced the night air. It was coming from behind the beach, from the area around the dunes.
Meï-Li was frightened: It's the dragon of the dunes! He wakes up sometimes! Moko wanted to learn more about this dragon. Meï-Li followed him.
As they approached the sandy hills, the sound became so strong it was near deafening... It almost sounds like it's moaning, or that it's singing as it cries, said Moko. What's the matter with you, dragon of the dunes?
The strange wailing continued… Without the dragon ever showing itself. Let's look around, said Moko, we'll find him sooner or later. Meï-Li was trembling so much that she could barely walk. Moko decided to search the dunes alone. Meï-Li was frightened he'd wind up devoured by the Dragon, and prayed for him to make it back to her safe and sound.
