16 - The light at the bottom of the sea

It is night time and Moko can’t sleep. Looking out to the horizon, he notices a shot of colour at the water’s surface. He wakes Mei-Li to ask her what he is seeing. Together they take a barge and set off. Under them, a rainbow of colours is dancing in the waves. Moko and Mei-Li think that the fish must be organizing a party and decide to dive in. Bit by bit the sun is rising and day is breaking. The two friends return to the village, overjoyed at the wonders of the ocean.

The lights of the bottom of the sea
In Meï-Li's village, the night was peaceful. The sea's waves rolled gently in and almost right up to the foot of the villager's huts. And the moon's pale yellow light washed over the trees, the rocks, and the beach. Moko wasn't sleeping… He was looking out at the horizon.
Suddenly, on the water's surface, he spotted what looked like a cluster of colors just under the waves. He woke Meï-Li. Come, let's see what this is! It looks like the sea is lighting up.
Moko and Meï-Li took a canoe and headed out and away from the shore. A fisherman said to them. Where are you going at this hour of the night? You're going to scare away the fish I'm trying to catch… We want to find out how the sea makes itself light up. The fisherman smiled. Children, the reefs around these beaches have many secrets, but it's likely just the moon reflecting on the water! Moko told himself that the man surely hadn't seen what Moko had seen.
